I met an old woman today
Painted red,
Red as the clay on the ground
She said,
“Do you see me standing here
I don't know I just don't know if I'm seen”?
I said,
“Yes I see so clearly,
You chilled my bones but I hold your gaze”
I was out in red desert land
Where I roamed
With my thoughts and my way
And I stumbled upon a valley
Painted red,
Red as the clay in my dreams
It was there she caught my eye
Below me, frozen still
Her hands were held to heart
Her eyes spoke right through me,
She said,
“Do not take anything here,
Do not touch, do not take”
She said,
“Do not take anything here,
Do not take”
And I see you,
Red clay woman I see…
And It was just an hour ago
I had found a piece
Of old clay pot on the ground
It touched such a longing in me
For a sense I remember,
So I’d kept it like a precious find
So I went back the same way I came
And I placed it on the soft red sand
I could feel these wise old hands
Who knew the story of this land
I said,
“I won’t take anything here,
I will not touch I will not take”
I said,
“I won’t take anything here,
I will not take”
And I see you,
Red clay woman I see…
She said,
“Do not take anything here,
Do not touch do not take”
She said,
“This valley is sacred to us,
Sacred as tears,
And holds the bones of my kin”
She said
“You do not know who sees you,
But we see you
She said,
“You do not know who sees you,
But we see you”
She said,
“This is my peoples spirit land,
My people’s spirits land,
Our people’s spirit land
